Our Day Out

I have for some time now tutored Performing Arts to learners with disabilities at The Learning Centre Bexley (formerly known as Adult Education College Bexley). This video was a recording of a final production devised during this year's course by the students themselves (with input from the carers, myself and Alison, one of the learner support assistants who was also in the video).

I felt this approach was very helpful when teaching students with a range of learning needs, since using video in the classroom was more than just showing evidence of work done, but also helped demonstrate to the students what they were doing and provided a new level of understanding to their learning. (It also recorded moments during rehearsals that often could not be repeated to an audience, as well giving us the freedom to use the whole hall space as opposed to being restricted to just a single stage area.)

I did have fun editing the video, and as you can see it is a finished short film in itself. Although I was not there during the student's end of year ceremony, I heard it was shown with great success, where many students, parents, carers and invited guests were wishing to take home a copy.
